Hide The Bible

I recently came across a rather sad website called 'Hide The Bible.' Its purpose is to share stories and photographs of the ingenious ways that people have found to hide one of the Gideons' Bibles, which are placed in hotel rooms. In this bizarre game, people have hidden the Bible in the closet, in the ironing board, between the curtains and curtain rail, behind the artwork or TV, under the sink, inbetween adjoining room doors, and even behind the toilet. Ingenious, but sad.
And it prompts me to ask: What extraordinary power is there in the Bible that causes people to want to hide it and then advertise that fact on the WORLD WIDE WEB?? You can even follow this site on Twitter! What a great irony that in their efforts to hide the Bible, they are inadvertently drawing the attention of the world to it??
Friends- you and I are involved in hiding the Bible too.... but it is no game for us. Thank God that we are called to encourage children to hide His word in their hearts, where no-one will ever be able to take it away from them. Now that is powerful.
I have hidden your word in my heart. Psalm 119: 11
Question: What would you say is the most powerful Bible verse that we could teach our children?

  1. Wow! That's a tough question...the most powerful verse. One that is important to me is (actually two): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5–6, NIV). I want my kids to know that they can trust God in all the circumstances of their lives. Circumstances change, but God is the same and they can turn to him.

  2. Thanks for responding Matt! That's a great verse. One I love to teach even very young kids is simply, 'I will be with you.' Exodus 3:12. I teach them to move 1 finger for each of the 5 words....(like their hand will always be with them too!)

  4. I think that there is one I always try to make sure the little ones learn and that's John 3:16. Maybe you should ask my son Zeke though.

  5. Hi Jenifer!
Thanks for commenting & for joining my site! I too love John 3:16! I see that you are a busy mom! I have 4 grown up sons but remember the days when they were little with fondness. I visited your son's blog...wow, what a great job you are doing parenting him! He knows so many eternal truths at such a young age. I hope you might find some inspiration from some of my posts as you continue to bring up your little ones!
    Blessings!

  7. Anonymous..thanks for visiting my blog, and for commenting. The main reason that I think this game is sad is because many lonely, or suicidal people book themselves into hotel rooms. Part of the intention of the Gideons in placing the Bible there is to bring comfort to people in these situations. I am interested..why do you think it's an excellent game?
